Idol is back for 06

Idol is a worldwide hit, proving its international appeal by becoming popular among diverse cultures across the globe. It seems that audiences, regardless of geography, are obsessed with the Idol format. Every Idol competition has caused controversy, but none more than that of Uzbekistan Idol 2005. It had deaths, attempted murders, even risqué photo shoots, but it was the final episode that proved to be the most controversial, we take a look back at that historic day….

After the on stage death of contestant Ivana Kumpakiske, and the subsequent fatal shooting of the other contestant Bronislava Ruslana, the title of idol winner was given to Mikael Spalko, thus finally ending the debate on who was to be this years Uzbekistan idol.

The elated 19 year old crooner with a donated voice box was now loved by millions. A once bullied boy had become a national hero. Combining good looks and stage presence with a complete inability to hit notes, Spalko had stormed his way onto Uzbekistan televisions, and now he was finally living his dream…

However it was to be the shortest reign in Uzbekistan Idol history.

Just moments after accepting the title of Idol Winner, a former disgruntled contestant, Boris Spatkovitch shocked everyone by announcing he was still very much alive, and then subsequently exploded the Uz Stadium where the show was taking place…

A twice detonated Spatkovitch exacts his revenge...

No one was thought to have survived, although a rescue operation was put into action.

But suddenly on the fith day rescue workers heard a muffled effeminate cry. This Cry was later identified as being that of Mikael Spalko.

To avoid injuries and death, Spalko had took refuge under the corpses of his fallen friends, and was saved from any falling debris.

Boris Spatkovitch faced 25,000 accounts of murder, but thankfully due to Spalko’s survival this was later decreased to 24,999 charges of murder with one account of attempted murder. He faces a lifetime sentence, but will be up for parole in 259 years.

Many thought this to be the end of Uzbekistan Idol, but how wrong they were...

4 months later and Spalko has released his new album, the self titled Mikael Spalko: National Hero, to critical acclaim….

"Mikael Spalko : National Hero" is available now

The Uzbekistan Observer recently said of Spalko, “ You don’t have to be a spectacular performer or technically brilliant vocalist to become an Idol legend. So it is no wonder that Mikael Spalko has made a lasting impression on the Uzbekistan population..”

Spalko’s National Hero Tour has been underway for 3 weeks, with at least 29% of the tickets sold already.

"I wanna Sex you up.." hit the charts at No 5 and has been regulary played in numerous top 20 countdowns.."

Idol winners in each country have become established stars including Kelly Clarkson (America), Will Young (UK), Guy Sebastian (Australia), Mikael Spalko ( Uzbekistan) and Heinz Winckler (South Africa). But who will be added to that ever-growing list?

As Uzbekistan Idol celebrates its hottest audition tour, the local series promises to create another batch of slick vocalists, custom-made pop stars to entertain you in the coming month, so stay tuned for a full list of this years idol contestants. ….
